Windows 10 is the most popular operating system today. Its comprehensive features and high compatibility make Windows 10 the perfect OS for anyone to use.

To get maximum performance, there are several important things that we must do after installing Windows 10, namely:

1. Install Updates

Install Updates Windows 10

Doing update is the first thing you should do when using Windows 10. This is useful to ensure we get the latest features, bug fixes, and security patches.

When installed for the first time, Windows 10 will also detect the current driver based on the built-in library in the ISO package. This sometimes causes some of the drivers on our laptop are still not installed so that the hardware cannot run.

Usually the most common are display drivers (VGA), card readers, biometric sensors, and other additional peripheral devices.

By updating, Windows can search for drivers that match these devices in a library on Microsoft servers. Usually after updating all drivers will be installed correctly.

Based on my experience, I don't need to install any more drivers after updating because all the drivers have been installed and the devices on the laptop can all run properly. But this may vary on another laptop or PC depending on the hardware in it.

2. Check the drivers that are still not installed

To make sure the laptop can run optimally, we have to check again whether all the drivers are installed.

Even though after updating almost all drivers will be installed automatically, there may be some devices that are still undetected. Usually this device requires a special driver that is included in the purchase package, or you can also search for it on the product vendor's site.

How to check drivers in Windows 10:

  1. Click the "Windows" button.
  2. In the search bar type "device manager" (without the quotes).
  3. Select the "Device Manager" menu.
  4. Check the drivers that are still not installed, usually there is an exclamation mark indicating that the driver is still not installed or having problems.
  5. Find the appropriate driver then install it.

3. Login Microsoft account

Some of the features in Windows 10 can only be used when you are logged in with a Microsoft account. This is also useful for synchronizing with other Windows devices such as Windows Phones, and PCs, using Windows 10, therefore it is highly recommended to log in.

If you don't already have a Microsoft account, you can create one first by following the steps below.

How to create a Microsoft account in Windows 10

  1. Click on the "Windows" button.
  2. Click "Accounts".
  3. Click "Create new account".
  4. Then, "fill in the appropriate data".
  5. Done.

4. Install office applications

The first application to install is an Office application. This is an application that will be used every day to work, create school and college assignments.

You're free to use any of the Office applications, but one of the best Office applications in my experience is Office 365.

If you prefer free Open Source applications, you can install applications such as Libre Office or Open Office, which have features that are no less complete than Microsoft's Office.

5. Install multimedia applications

Install multimedia applications on windows 10

Windows 10 is equipped with a built-in Multimedia application that can be used to play music and videos, but for some people its appearance and features are still less familiar and prefer to install Multimedia applications that are usually used.

To play music files (mp3) I usually use AIMP, and to play video files the best application is Media Player Classic. Both of these applications are Freeware applications that can be used for free.

6. Install photo and video editor applications

The next application that must be installed is a photo and video editor.

In Windows 10 there is a photo editor application that is simple but very powerful, namely PhotoScape X. This is an application that I use every day, I really like its modern appearance and its features that are very easy to use.

For video editors you can use open source applications such as Shortcuts or Openshot. This application can be used for free  features that are quite complete, not inferior to expensive video editor applications. As long as you are creating the results can also be good.

7. Install a Browser

Install browser for windows 10

The application that must be installed on Windows 10 is the browser. Even though Windows 10 already has a built-in browser, but I'm pretty sure not many people are loyal to it.

Usually the default Windows browsers (Internet Explorer and Edge) are only used when you first install Windows, which is to download other browsers. Sounds cruel, but that's the fact.

So far, as usual, the best browser apps for Windows 10 are Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. These two browsers are the most widely used because they are very complete in features. We can also easily find various kinds of extensions that can be installed for our various purposes.

Update: Currently, the Microsoft Edge browser is improving a lot, is light and fast, and it looks more modern. You have to try it.

8. Activate System Restore Point

System restore point in windows 10

System Restore Point is very useful for rolling back the system when an error occurs that cannot be resolved.

From time to time there will be problems with laptops that disturb our work, such as applications that cannot be opened, Windows often have blue screens, and devices that cannot function normally.

Even though we have tried various methods, the results are still nil, now at times like this we can use a Restore Point, to return the laptop to a previous state where the system is still "healthy".

Simply by doing a restore using the Restore Point that has been created, the system will rollback, and usually the error will be resolved by itself.

9. Make sure Windows Security is active and everything is "green"

Windows 10 security is active

Windows Security is the best antivirus for Windows 10 provided we always make sure it's up to date and active. If you are someone who is lazy to install antivirus, then using Windows Security alone is enough to keep our laptops free of viruses.

This security feature from Microsoft will be activated automatically since we first installed Windows 10.

How to check the security of windows 10

  1. Go to "Settings".
  2. Click "Update & Security".
  3. Finally, select "Windows Security".
Make sure all the check marks (✓) there are green. If there is an exclamation point (!), then immediately make the suggested fixes.

10. Email Settings

To get email notifications on our laptops, we can use the Mail application in Windows 10. This way, we can know immediately every time a new email comes in and reply immediately without having to open a browser.

The Mail application on Windows 10 can be used for all types of email, be it Gmail, Yandex Mail, Outlook, company email at work, campus email, or custom email using your own domain.

How to add an email account on Windows 10:

  1. Open the Mail application, you can do this by typing "mail" in the search bar and then selecting the Mail application.
  2. Click the Settings button (gear icon).
  3. Select Manage accounts.
  4. Click the Add account button.
  5. Select the email provider.
  6. Login or create a new email.

After a new email is successfully added, every time there is an inbox, the notification will appear on the laptop.

11. Optimized the power plan settings

One of the ways to speed up Windows 10 is to adjust the Power Plan settings. Maybe this sounds a bit unique, because it seems that the power settings and performance of Windows 10 have nothing to do with it. But in fact, this is quite influential.

Windows 10 has an algorithm to reduce laptop performance when the laptop battery reaches a certain level, especially when it's low.

This of course will make the laptop performance slowdown. Maybe you will feel a little lag when doing heavy work when the battery is close to low.

To prevent this, we can change the Power Plan settings so that the laptop's performance remains fast, even though it is not connected to a charger.

How to change Powered Plan settings to keep laptop performance tight

  1. Enter the Control Panel.
  2. Select Power Option.
  3. In the active power plan, click the Change plan settings option
  4. At the bottom of the options, click Change advanced power settings.
  5. Select High performance or Balanced.
  6. Click OK.

12. Change the display settings for maximum performance

Having a beautiful Windows 10 theme with transparent effects and animations is great fun, but this means we have sacrificed a number of resources that should have been maximized for performance.

I prefer the minimalist and flat appearance of Windows because this can make Windows 10 feel lighter. You can do it too.

How to change the display for maximum performance in Windows 10

  1. Enter Settings.
  2. Select Personalization.
  3. Click the Color menu.
  4. Turn off the.
  5. Transparency effects option until it becomes Off.

How to Turn Off Animation Effects On Windows 10 Display

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Select System.
  3. Click on Advanced system settings.
  4. Select the Advanced tab
  5. In the Performance option, click Settings.
  6. On the Visual Effects tab, check Adjust for best performance.
  7. Click OK.

13. Activate Cortana

Cortana is a visual assistant based on AI (artificial intelligence) in Windows 10. Using Cortana is a very fun and useful thing, especially for doing quick searches without having to type keywords using the keyboard.

There are so many things Cortana can do from turning off the computer, making notes, checking and reading out incoming e-mails, performing web searches, defining words in English and other languages, the great thing is that we can do all of that with just voice commands.

After doing the tips above, your Windows 10 is perfect and ready to use. Don't forget to update regularly to keep up with the latest features, getting here Windows 10 the nicer and lighter. Windows 10 is by far the best operating system I have used, Good luck!
